Most common faults in electric ovens

The electric oven is a relatively robust appliance but the most frequent faults we see are four. First, burnt top heating element. The element on the oven roof suffers most because it’s subjected to continuous high temperatures and to grease splashes when especially juicy dishes are cooked without aluminium foil cover. When it burns out, the upper half of the oven stops heating and dishes cook unevenly. Replacement is a 60-90 minute job per unit and the part is in stock for common brands.

Second, lost thermostat. The thermostat is the sensor that reads internal temperature and compares it with the programmed one. When it fails, the oven may never reach program temperature or overheat and burn food. Diagnosis is done with a kitchen thermometer placed in the oven: if what the oven displays doesn’t match what the real thermometer reads, the thermostat is the cause.

Third, failed electronic programmer. In modern ovens with digital display, the programmer is the electronics that coordinates temperature, time and cooking modes. When it fails, the oven may stop responding to commands, show error codes, or restart mid-program. Programmer replacement costs a significant share of a new oven price, so on ovens over 8-10 years you have to weigh repair vs replacement.

Fourth, faulty door seal. The oven door has special hinges with tension springs that keep constant pressure on the seal to ensure tightness. Over time the springs give and the door stops closing properly, generating heat losses, higher power use and uneven cooking. Hinge replacement is a quick and cheap job.

Pyrolytic and catalytic ovens

Premium modern ovens have self-cleaning systems requiring specific attention. Pyrolysis subjects the oven to extreme temperatures (450-500°C) for 2-3 hours to incinerate adhered grease. Very effective but stresses every oven component. If your pyrolytic oven has started to fail after several pyrolysis cycles, some component may have suffered from extreme temperatures and need replacing.

Catalysis is gentler: special walls coated with material that oxidises grease at normal cooking temperatures. Doesn’t need a special cycle but walls eventually saturate and stop absorbing grease. Catalytic panel replacement costs less than swapping the oven and restores the original self-cleaning function.

Gas ovens and precautions

Gas ovens are less common than electric but still seen in some homes. Their typical faults are pilot not lighting (faulty igniter electrode or thermocouple), yellow flame instead of blue (badly tuned air-gas mix), or no flame after starting the burner (blocked safety valve). Gas work we always do with a gas-qualified technician and post-work verification with electronic leak detector. Regulation is strict and any incorrect repair can have serious consequences.
