The pool nobody wants to maintain but everybody wants to use
It’s the open secret of Costa Blanca urbanisations. You buy a villa with a pool thinking of summer dips and discover the thing needs attention every month, including winter, when nobody’s in it. Skip the care and by May you find a green jungle lake that needs shock treatment costing more than a full year of monthly service.
We get clients calling after 4-5 months of neglect. Algae on the walls, opaque green-brown water, filter clogged with leaves and pet hair. Recovery can take 3-7 consecutive working days: partial drain, brush and algicide treatment of walls, water replacement, chlorine shock, pH balancing and long filtration runs. The final bill comfortably exceeds what year-round monthly care would have cost.
What we do
Full monthly maintenance, the most popular package. Weekly visits in high season (June-September) and fortnightly visits in low season (October-May). Each visit covers water analysis with strip and electronic test, pH, free and combined chlorine, alkalinity and hardness adjustment; skimmer and pump pre-filter cleaning; wall and floor brushing; bottom vacuuming with hose or robot.
Deep robotic cleaning: we bring a Dolphin or Zodiac robot that covers floor, walls and waterline over 2-3 hours and leaves the pool spotless. Recommended at least monthly in high season and before any event (birthday, holiday rental check-in).
Filter and pump repairs: filter sand replacement (every 5-7 years), multiport valve, circulation pump that won’t start or makes noise, faulty timer. Water chemistry including saltwater chlorination, increasingly popular here for swim comfort and chemical reduction.
What pools on the Costa Blanca deal with
Sun is factor number one. A pool exposed to 12 hours of sun a day in July-August loses chlorine fast through UV degradation. Without proper stabiliser (cyanuric acid) chlorine evaporates before it works and algae appear inside 48 hours. Weekend owners have this problem: chlorine added Sunday is gone by Friday.
Saharan dust, common here, leaves a thin yellow-brown layer on the water that isn’t soluble and sinks. That clogs the filter and demands extra cleaning. Same with pines and eucalyptus when the urbanisation has trees near the pool, leaves and tree oils shift water pH.
High temperatures encourage bacteria and algae. An untreated pool in August turns green in 3-4 days. Weekend manual chlorination isn’t enough, you need an automatic dosing system or regular professional maintenance to keep water within healthy ranges.

Chlorine, algicide, pH adjuster, flocculant, all included in the standard monthly price. Products are chosen by pool type (chlorine, salt or bromine) and by water analysis.

Old 80s-90s villa filtration systems are often oversized and can be swapped for modern smaller, efficient kit with substantial electricity savings.

Pricing and quotes
Full monthly maintenance on a standard 30-50 m³ pool, weekly visits in high and fortnightly in low season, chemicals included: 95-160 euros a month. One-off deep clean with robot, analysis and chemistry: 90-150 euros. Recovery of a neglected pool: 250-700 euros depending on state, plus water cost if partial drain is needed.
Standard 0.75 HP filter pump replacement with installation: 280-480 euros. Full filter sand change including the sand: 180-260 euros. Pool electrical board with timer and RCD: 220-380 euros. Conversion from chlorine to salt chlorinator: 1,100-1,700 euros installed.

How often should the pool be serviced?
High season (June-September): weekly. Low season (October-May): every 15 days is enough to hold parameters. Heavy tree cover or intensive use: weekly all year.
Are chemicals included?
Yes, standard monthly service includes chlorine, algicide, pH adjuster, flocculant and all routine products. Special treatments (descale, algae shock) are charged separately if one-off.
How is a green pool recovered?
Depends on state. Light green: chlorine shock, 24h filtration, flocculant. Deep green with stuck algae: partial drain, mechanical wash, specific products, long filtration. Window: 2-7 days.
Can a chlorine pool be converted to saltwater?
Yes, by fitting a salt chlorinator into the filtration loop. Cost 1,100-1,700 euros. The pool then makes its own chlorine from added salt, fewer chemicals and better swim comfort.
Do you repair old pumps and filters?
Yes, while parts are available. Saci, Astralpool, Espa, Bombas IDEAL etc. If repair exceeds 60% of a new pump’s cost, replacement is recommended.
