The fridge that stopped cooling on a Friday afternoon
It’s the classic call from a household with two kids and a fridge full of weekend food. The fridge starts making an odd noise in the morning, by afternoon the interior light is on but it’s no longer cold. You have 24-36 hours before yoghurts, cheese, deli meat and 200 euros of shopping go bad. The urgency is real.
The technicians we work with come the same day or the next at the latest. Diagnosis happens on the first visit: motor, thermostat, temperature probe, refrigerant gas or electrical circuit. 70% of the time the repair happens in that same visit because the most common parts (thermostat, probe, internal fan) are in the technician’s van.
What we repair
Front and top-loading washing machines, all the brands common in Spain: Bosch, Balay, Siemens, AEG, LG, Samsung, Whirlpool, Indesit, Beko. Most frequent failures are cracked door seal (water leak), drain pump blocked by coins or hair, electronic control board failure, worn drum bearings causing excessive spin-cycle noise.
Fridges and fridge-freezers with cooling failure: lost gas (the old R134a can no longer be legally topped up, the circuit needs replacing), damaged thermostat, faulty internal probe, freezer fan stopped. American-style double-door fridges with ice/water dispenser, where the door electronics and water filter system fail.
Electric and gas ovens with element failure (the top one burns out more often), lost thermostat, electronic timer failure or door seal issues. Ceramic hobs with one zone not heating or unresponsive to digital controls. Induction hobs with circuits damaged by power surges. Microwaves with failed magnetron (the part that generates the microwaves).
What appliances on the Costa Blanca face
Costa Blanca water is very hard, which directly affects washing machines and dishwashers. Limescale builds up on the heating element. When that element scales over, it draws up to twice the electricity and eventually burns out. Houses with a softener clearly extend appliance life, without one, a washing machine lasts 7-9 years; with one, 12-15.
In holiday rentals we see brutal usage: 3-4 wash cycles a day in summer, dishwasher running twice daily, hob on for hours. Mid-low range appliances die at their fourth summer. For rentals we always recommend mid-high range with three years of paid warranty.
There’s a regional detail many overlook: many British and Nordic homes brought their own appliances when they bought on the Costa Blanca. Repairing a Hotpoint or Bosch UK washing machine is possible (components are very similar to the European range), but parts can take 7-15 days if they need to be sourced from the UK.
Technicians who fix things, not just sell new ones
The appliance repair sector suffers from commercial pressure from brands who prefer you buy new. Some official service technicians produce pessimistic diagnoses that justify replacement even when the repair is a third of the cost. The technicians we work with have no incentive to push new units, they make a living repairing and diagnose honestly.
Basic rule: if the repair exceeds 50-60% of an equivalent new unit, we tell you and you decide. Replacing a motor in an 8-year-old washing machine for 280 euros when a new mid-range unit costs 480 euros usually doesn’t make sense. But changing an 80-euro door seal always does. Transparency is the basis of the trust.
