When summer hits and the AC stops cooling
It’s August, 36 degrees in the shade, and the unit you haven’t touched in three years starts making a strange noise and pushing out more warm air than cold. You’ll go two nights without proper sleep before someone shows up. We see it every summer in Torrevieja, La Mata, Punta Prima, in any coastal urbanisation. Breakdowns rarely happen in March when every technician is free.
Our network includes technicians with active F-Gas certification, the only legal requirement in Spain to handle refrigerant gas. It’s not an administrative detail: if someone installs or repairs your AC without certification, the manufacturer warranty is void and a Generalitat Valenciana inspection can fine the property owner.
What we do
1×1 split installation in single rooms and 2×1, 3×1 or 4×1 multi-splits when several rooms need cooling from a single outdoor unit. Most apartments here, especially the 80s and 90s blocks with enclosed balconies, demand multi-splits because the facade can’t take several outdoor units.
Full annual maintenance: filter and indoor coil cleaning, gas charge check, pressure readings, condensate tray emptying and certified disinfection. It prevents 80% of serious AC breakdowns.
Repair of splits that don’t cool (usually a gas leak or worn-out compressor), heat pumps for winter, commercial AC for shops and restaurants, and full replacement of older units with modern inverter models.
Costa Blanca air has its own story
Salt air. Outdoor units installed within 500 metres of the sea, Cabo Roig, La Mata, Mil Palmeras, suffer accelerated corrosion on coil and casing. What lasts 15 years in Madrid lasts 8 here without serious maintenance. You see it in the cooling: at 5 years the unit performs half as well as the first summer.
Saharan dust. The fine sticky layer that arrives every summer gets into filters and the indoor fan. Skip cleaning twice a year and that dust mixes with humidity and creates mould. The musty smell when you switch the AC back on after summer? That’s what it is.
Community rules. Many urbanisations have bylaws that ban outdoor units on the front facade or require them behind an approved grille. Check the rulebook or ring the administrator before quoting. It saves you a forced removal.
F-Gas certified, not an electrician who throws AC in as a freebie
It’s the classic summer trap. You’re offered AC installation for 200 euros less because an electrician or plumber friend will fit it. No F-Gas certificate. It may work the first year, but a gas leak means no fallback with the manufacturer. Initial gas charge with electronic scale, vacuum to −700 mbar with a real pump and the leak test are non-negotiable. Without them the unit lasts half as long.
We work with technicians who hold a current certificate and all the proper kit: digital vacuum gauge, gas scale, manifold, flaring tool. It shows in equipment lifespan. A properly installed Mitsubishi, Daikin or LG runs 12–15 years in normal conditions.

Pricing and quotes
Every case is different, but for orientation: a standard 1×1 split installation with under 4 metres of copper, support bracket, gas and commissioning runs 250–450 euros. A 2×1 multi-split with two indoor units, 700–1,100 euros. Full annual maintenance, 70–110 euros per unit.
Quotes are free and always after a site visit. No honest AC quote can be given without seeing the property: copper run distances, outdoor unit position and electrical board capacity all need to be checked. Anything you see online for 100 euros is bait.
