Why mosquito nets are essential on the Costa Blanca

Living on the Costa Blanca with doors or windows shut in summer makes no sense. Outdoor night-time temperature is pleasant most of the season, sea air is healthy, and letting air flow at night cools the home naturally without making the AC do double the work. The obstacle is mosquitoes. Three species are present locally: the common mosquito that breeds in standing water (typical of areas with badly maintained pools or gardens with continuous irrigation), the Segura mosquito especially active in summer near the river’s damp zones, and the invasive tiger mosquito which has colonised the whole Spanish Mediterranean region over the last 15 years and bites in daylight too. Without nets, opening windows in summer means living among bites.

A professional made-to-measure net solves the problem permanently. The difference vs generic nets sold in big-box stores is in four factors: perfect fit to the aperture (generic ones leave side gaps where mosquitoes get in), mesh quality (generic uses thin plastic mesh that degrades in 1-2 summers in the sun; pro uses treated fibreglass that lasts 8-10 years), aluminium frame robustness (generic has thin profile that warps; pro has reinforced profile), and operation mechanism (generic comes with cheap elastics; pro with quality springs and magnetic closures).

Net types and where to use them

The vertical roll-up is the standard solution for medium windows. The net rolls into an upper box when not in use and pulls down with a cord when needed. Discreet when retracted and lets you keep panoramic view without obstacle.

The side roll-up is the horizontal version of the above, ideal for patio doors and tall apertures where vertical roll-up would be excessive. The box mounts to the side and the mesh slides horizontally. Works very well on French doors and large sliding doors.

The sliding for terrace doors is the most-demanded option on the Costa Blanca due to the frequency of patio doors. A mosquito net framed in aluminium sliding on rails parallel to the door. Lets you keep the door open day and night with the space free of mosquitoes.

The fixed for windows is the simplest and cheapest option. An aluminium frame with tensioned mesh anchored permanently in the window aperture. Suitable for windows rarely opened or not used as exit points.

The pleated is the premium option for large apertures where roll-up won’t reach or isn’t aesthetic. The mesh folds accordion-style on one or two sides of the aperture. Aesthetically the best but also priciest and most maintenance-intensive.

Materials and durability

For first-row coastal zones, we always recommend anodised marine-treated aluminium frame and PVC-coated fibreglass mesh. That combination resists salt, UV sun and continuous humidity easily 8-10 years. For inland zones, standard aluminium frame and basic mesh suffice and reduce cost without penalising real durability.

For sliding doors with intensive use (families with kids or pets going in and out), we reinforce rails with greater-section profile and pick magnetic double-closures that hold thousands of operations without wear.

FAQ

How long to make a net?

5-10 days from measurement to install. Special or very large models may need 15-20 days.

Site visit for measurement?

Yes, mandatory to ensure exact dimensions. Without precise measurement, the net risks not fitting properly.

Do they handle strong wind?

Sliding and pleated yes. Roll-ups must be retracted on very windy days to avoid damage to mesh and box.

Can they combine with existing blinds?

Yes. For windows with installed blinds, the net mounts outside or inside the aperture as it allows. For new construction, combined blind+net box is the cleanest option.

Which mesh do you recommend?

PVC-coated fibreglass for coastal zones. Interlaced aluminium for intensive use (pets that scratch). Specific anti-pollen if allergies.
