The real saving from a modern thermostat

Replacing a classic analog thermostat with a programmable or connected one is probably the most cost-effective improvement you can make in a home with central heating. The analog thermostat has one logic: fire the boiler when temperature drops below setpoint and stop when reached. It doesn’t know whether you’re home or not, doesn’t adapt to your real schedule, doesn’t leverage the building’s thermal inertia. A modern thermostat introduces intelligence: fine hourly programming, presence detection, mobile geolocation to anticipate returns, automatic outdoor-temperature adjustment. The result is typical 15-25% saving on the annual heating bill without sacrificing comfort, often improving it.

The second less-obvious benefit is remote control. For holiday homes or second residences, switching heating on from your phone as you arrive means the house is warm when you walk in without having heated it for the days before. Saving versus maintaining minimum heating during the entire off-season can be very significant. Initial investment in a good thermostat pays back in one or two seasons in most cases.

Models we recommend

Tado is our first recommendation. Modular system with central head, optional individual TRV heads on each radiator for full zoning. Well-designed app, reliable geofencing, Google Home and Alexa integration. Official Spanish support and responsive service.

Nest Learning Thermostat (Google) is the premium alternative. Learns your routines automatically over the first week and adjusts schedules itself. Beautiful design, elegant circular display, minimal interface. Works very well in single-zone setups but lacks Tado’s native zoning.

Honeywell Evohome is the zoning option for many rooms in a single large home. Up to 12 independent zones with TRV heads per radiator and one central control. The pro solution when you have a large home with very different uses per room. Pricier and more complex to install but also the most capable.

For tighter budgets, Salus or Drayton thermostats offer basic hourly programming and WiFi connection at reasonable price, without advanced features but enough for most cases.

The install process

A standard swap from analog to WiFi-connected takes 1-2 hours. We isolate the boiler circuit, remove the existing thermostat, identify the wiring (typically two wires: power and boiler call, or a bus cable on more modern systems). Connect the new thermostat per manufacturer diagram, fix to the wall, restore power.

The most critical part is initial configuration. We connect the thermostat to your home WiFi, pair it with the mobile app (downloaded on your phone), create your user account, and set schedules per your real routine. For Tado or similar with TRV heads, we repeat pairing per head. We end with a full test with boiler firing and stopping per thermostat command, and a quick app walkthrough.

For holiday rentals

If you manage a holiday rental, a connected thermostat is practically mandatory. Lets you turn off heating remotely when guests check out (they forget half the time), turn it on before the next guest arrives so they walk into a warm home, and monitor consumption remotely to spot abnormal use.

FAQ

Does it work with any boiler?

Most yes. Modern boilers with OpenTherm have native integration. Older boilers with simple relay need a compatible model. We check first.

How much do you really save?

Typically 15-25% of the annual heating bill. More coming from an analog thermostat with no schedule. Less if you already had hourly programming.

Does it work if I travel?

Yes, as long as your home WiFi stays on. You can switch heating on or off from any country. Schedules and settings work automatically.

What if WiFi goes down?

Thermostat keeps working on its locally saved schedule. You only lose remote control and new settings until WiFi returns.

What’s the warranty?

2-3 years official from the manufacturer by brand. Plus 30 days of our cover on installation and initial setup.
