Why doors drag on the Costa Blanca

It’s a very specific local pattern. Solid wood interior doors, especially in 80s-90s blocks, swell and shrink with seasonal humidity changes. In summer, with high humidity and high temperature, the wood absorbs moisture and expands. The door no longer closes properly, drags on the top or side jamb, and forcing it just damages the hinge.

In winter, with low humidity and the dry westerly wind, the wood contracts. The door closes fine but you see a visible gap between door and frame, letting air and noise through. It’s the natural cycle of solid wood and only two things prevent it: replace with MDF or multi-laminate, which don’t move, or accept it and adjust hinges seasonally.

Adjustable vs non-adjustable hinges

Traditional ball-and-socket hinges, the ones in old construction doors, are not adjustable. If the door drags, you have to plane the wood or replace hinges with modern adjustable models. Planing 1-2 mm off the dragging area, sealing the cut and the door closes again is the typical fix when the issue is seasonal.

Modern adjustable hinges, the ones on kitchen cabinets and MDF or melamine doors, allow three-axis adjustment: up-down, in-out, left-right. With a screwdriver and two minutes per hinge, you reposition the door without touching wood. Ideal, but you need compatible hinges to begin with.

Blinds that are hard to raise or jam

Common in Torrevieja blocks and around. PVC blinds with a cord winder accumulate dust and debris in the side guides. The cord wears over years and sometimes snaps in the middle of summer, leaving the blind half-mast. If the cord is intact, the typical fix is cleaning the guides and lubricating the system with specific product (not standard oil, which attracts more dust).

If the cord has snapped, you open the upper box and replace it. 30-45 minutes per cord with a normally accessible box. In some older installations the box is closed behind tile and you have to thread the cord through the guide without opening, that takes more experience and special tools.

Aluminium windows: closure adjustment

80s-90s anodised aluminium windows have espagnolette mechanisms that drift over time. Closures stop pressing properly and the window lets air in through the sides even when visually closed. Fix is to adjust the closing strikers with a screwdriver and, if very worn, replace them with compatible modern parts.

For more modern tilt-and-turn windows with thermal-break aluminium, the fittings are higher quality but still need maintenance. Lubricating hinges and adjusting closing points every 2-3 years extends life noticeably and stops cold drafts in winter or stiffness opening.

FAQ

Can a door be adjusted without planing?

If the hinges are modern adjustable, yes. If they’re old non-adjustable, you plane 1-2 mm or upgrade to adjustable hinges.

How long to fix a blind?

Cleaning and lubricating guides: 30-45 minutes per blind. Cord replacement: another 30-45 minutes with a normally accessible box.

Why does air come through a closed window?

Misaligned closures or worn seals. We adjust strikers and replace seals as needed. Better insulation, lower bill.

Do you work on modern tilt-and-turn windows?

Yes, we adjust the tilt mechanism, lubricate fittings and replace handles or parts if damaged. Recommend maintenance every 2-3 years.

Can a door that swells in summer be fixed permanently?

Only by replacing with MDF or multi-laminate, which don’t move. Solid wood will always have that seasonal cycle even when varnished.
