What to do with a short circuit or burning smell

First and most important: if you smell burning plastic or see smoke near a socket or the switchboard, immediately throw the main breaker on the board and call for emergency help. Don’t wait. Burning smell in electricity almost always means a wire or fitting is heating to the point of melting insulation. The natural next step is fire. Throwing the main breaker cuts power and gives the technician time to arrive without further damage.

If what’s happening is the RCD trips constantly, you have an earth leak somewhere in the installation. Don’t reset it more than three times in a row. Each attempt stresses components further. Find the suspect appliance by unplugging things one by one, and if you can’t locate the cause, call the electrician. Earth leaks can be a faulty appliance, damp in a back box, or degraded cable.

The RCD: how it works and when to worry

The RCD is the most sensitive component on the board and also the most important for personal safety. If it trips once and resets fine, it’s usually a single appliance: the washing machine, the AC, a halogen bulb with a broken lamp. Identify it and repair or replace.

If it trips repeatedly with no clear cause, there’s a more serious issue. Possible causes: damp in back boxes (common in bathrooms and kitchens with poor seals), slow leakage in an appliance that only shows at certain temperature, deteriorated embedded cable, or the RCD itself aged and trip-happy from any tiny disturbance.

A modern RCD properly calibrated has a useful life of 15-20 years with maintenance. Old 80s-90s ones are often beyond useful life and worth swapping preventively.

Risks of ignoring the signs

The most common mistake is resetting the RCD repeatedly until it stays. Temporary fix and dangerous. Every time you reset, the problem stays in the cable or appliance. The leak eventually becomes a hard fault and the next symptom can be fire or shock.

Another mistake is ignoring a burning smell, thinking it’s something new bedding in. Modern electronics don’t smell of burning plastic in normal use. If they do, something is melting. Always grounds for an urgent call.

Response time and availability

For electrical emergencies in coastal Costa Blanca, our response is under 2 hours daytime and under 4 hours at night or on holidays. We work 7 days a week. Inland areas like Crevillente, Aspe or Almoradí can be slightly slower depending on duty electrician availability.

Night service (8pm-8am) and holidays carry a legal surcharge on standard rates. We tell you before confirming. If the emergency is real (fire risk, shock, no power with elderly or children) we prioritise without discussion.

FAQ

How fast do you arrive in an emergency?

Under 2 hours daytime in coastal areas. Under 4 hours at night or on holidays. Exact time confirmed on the call.

What do I do while waiting?

If burning smell or smoke, drop the main breaker and open windows. If just a tripping RCD, don’t reset more than 3 times.

How much does an out-of-hours call-out cost?

It carries a legal surcharge on standard rates. We always tell you before confirming the visit.

Will you fix it in the same visit?

80% of the time yes. If the part isn’t standard we leave the installation safe and return in 24-48h with it.

Do you work with all distribution companies?

Yes. We diagnose the home installation. If the problem is on the distributor side (Iberdrola, Endesa) we help you raise the incident with them.
