Spanish plug types: what to know if you’re from elsewhere
Spain uses the European Schuko Type F socket, two round pins with two side earth contacts. It’s the same standard as Germany, France (with variant), Italy and most of the continent. There are nuances though that surprise expats arriving on the Costa Blanca with appliances from home.
British residents arrive with three-pin Type G plugs. Modern electronics that accept 100-240V work perfectly with an adapter. Older heating or kitchen appliances may not. Always check the label. For permanent use we recommend replacing the cable with a Spanish Schuko plug instead of using adapters that overheat under heavy load.
French residents come with Type E, which has earth via a third pin. Partially compatible with Spanish Schuko but earth may not function correctly. We mention it because clients call thinking the socket is broken when it’s actually the partial system incompatibility. The fix is replacing the Spanish socket with universal Schuko or rewiring the French plug.
Installing new sockets
To add a socket where there was none, two approaches. First is chasing: cut a channel in the wall from the nearest existing socket to the new point, run cable inside and patch with plaster. It’s the cleanest visually but implies minor building work and repainting. Time: 4-6 hours plus wall reinstatement.
Second approach is surface conduit. PVC trunking is fixed along the skirting or ceiling and the cable runs visibly inside. No building work, done in an hour. Aesthetic is debatable but for occasional points like adding a socket behind a TV or desk, perfectly valid.
Smart switches and dimmers
Replacing a standard switch with a dimmer requires first checking the bulb is compatible. Standard LED bulbs are often not dimmable. Only LEDs labelled dimmable work properly. Older halogens dimmed fine but are hardly used now due to power use.
WiFi smart switches like Sonoff, Shelly or the integrated Philips Hue range fit in 30-60 minutes per point provided the existing back box has room for the electronic module. Older small back boxes sometimes don’t fit and need full box replacement, adding work.
Two-way switching
That’s the install that lets you turn the same light on and off from two or three different points. Most common is hallway or bedroom: switch by the door and another by the bed. If wiring isn’t set up for two-way, a new cable has to be run between the points, possibly via chasing or surface conduit.

FAQ
How long to install a new socket?
With surface trunking, 1-2 hours. With chased cable and wall reinstatement, 4-6 hours plus paint touch-up.
Will my British or American appliances work?
Modern ones yes (100-240V). Older heating or kitchen appliances may not handle 230V. Check the label before plugging in.
Can I have WiFi smart switches?
Yes, Sonoff, Shelly, Philips Hue. Install 30-60 minutes per point if the existing back box has room.
Are all LEDs dimmable?
No. Only LEDs labelled dimmable work with a dimmer. Standard ones flicker or don’t turn on.
Is a power cut needed?
Only on the affected circuit, not the whole house. Work on a specific socket or switch is done by tripping that one MCB.
