What our service includes

Four commitments that set a professional job apart.

Site assessment

Evaluation of existing board, cable size check and real installation sizing.

Legal installation

RCDs and MCBs to REBT, official boletín signed by an authorised installer.

Labelling and test

Each circuit clearly labelled and full function test before closing the board.

Warranty

Manufacturer warranty on materials plus 30 days on labour.

MCB, RCD and why the difference matters

Both components live in every modern switchboard but they protect against different things. The MCB (miniature circuit breaker) protects against overload and short circuit. Plug too much into a single circuit or have two cables short out, and the MCB trips and disconnects. Its job is to protect the wiring and prevent fire.

The RCD protects people. It detects the difference between the current entering and leaving the installation. If that difference exceeds 30 milliamps, something or someone is leaking current to earth and the RCD trips in under 30 milliseconds. This is what prevents electrocution when a washing machine fault makes the metal casing live and you touch it.

REBT regulations and why they matter

The Reglamento Electrotécnico de Baja Tensión is the Spanish standard governing all electrical installations. It defines the minimum number of circuits a board must have, the cable size required for each circuit type, where RCDs and MCBs go, and how everything must be documented.

Any board installed before 2003 is almost certainly outside current regulations. The 80s installations seen in many apartments in Torrevieja and Punta Prima still work, but don’t meet modern safety standards. That means in case of an incident with damage to people or neighbours, the insurer can refuse to pay citing non-compliant installation.

Signs your board is obsolete

The board has ceramic fuses instead of modern MCBs. There’s no RCD or just one general RCD covering all circuits. RCDs trip frequently with no obvious cause, indicating they’re aged. Fewer than 4-5 circuits for a whole home, when the standard requires a minimum of 5 (lighting, general sockets, kitchen, washer, bathroom and air conditioning). The board is full and there’s no room to add circuits for an EV charger or other modern equipment.

If you recognise more than one of these on your board, consider the upgrade. It’s not a technical whim, obsolete installations are statistically the leading cause of domestic electrical fires in Spain.

The full upgrade process

It starts with a technical visit by an authorised electrician who assesses the board and installation. They measure the real cable size, identify overloaded circuits, detect existing earth leakage. You get a fixed quote with a detailed breakdown.

On the work day, mains is off for 4-8 hours depending on complexity. The old board comes out, the new one goes in with RCDs and MCBs calibrated to each circuit’s load, every breaker is labelled with the zone it protects, and the lot is tested under real load. At the end the official boletín is signed and handed over, and the distributor is notified if there’s a power change.

Living without power for a few hours: how to plan

To minimise disruption, board upgrades are scheduled mornings between 9 and 14h. The fridge holds 4 hours unopened. Digital clocks reset at the end. Routers come back on their own. If you have critical medical equipment like an oxygen concentrator, we coordinate ahead and bring a portable generator.

FAQ

How long for a full board upgrade?

For a standard 80-100 m² flat with 5-7 circuits, 4-8 hours. For villas or larger homes with more circuits, can be a full day.

Is a power cut needed?

Yes, throughout the work. We schedule it during business hours (9-14h) to minimise disruption. If you have critical equipment we coordinate separately.

What is the boletín and what’s it for?

The official document signed by an authorised installer certifying the installation meets REBT. You need it for the electricity company and the insurer.

Can I add circuits without changing the whole board?

Sometimes yes, if the existing board has space and the installation supports it. We assess on the site visit.

Do you work with an authorised installer?

Yes, all work requiring a boletín is signed by an installer registered with the Comunidad Valenciana.
