When you change a lock

There are three typical situations where a Costa Blanca owner decides to change a lock. The first is having bought the property and wanting fresh locks with keys you control, without knowing how many copies of the original set exist with previous owners, estate agents or cleaners. The second is having lost the keys and not knowing where they are, anyone could pick them up and try your door. The third is separation or tenant change in rentals where someone with a key copy could access and you don’t want to take that risk. For all three, the fix is the same: change the whole lock or, if the mechanism is in good shape, just the cylinder. The cost difference is significant.

Just changing the cylinder is a 30-45 minute job per door. The mechanical lock stays and only the inner cylinder where the key fits is replaced. The new key is completely different and won’t open with the old one. It’s the cheaper option and what we recommend when the lock is good quality and in good shape. Changing the whole lock costs more and is justified when the lock is old or low quality and you want to use the change to step up security. That takes 60-90 minutes per door.

Which cylinder to pick

For a Costa Blanca home with medium risk (estate with neighbours, not isolated), we recommend a mid-to-high range anti-bump cylinder. Brands like Tesa T80, Mottura Champions or Cisa Astral are what we sell most. These have security pins that block the bumping technique (sharp tap with a special key that opens any standard cylinder in under 60 seconds), have registered security keys (can’t be copied without authorisation at any hardware shop) and EN1303 European certification guaranteeing manipulation resistance for years. Cost is reasonable and real security improvement is enormous.

For isolated villas, ground-floor homes or properties with previous incidents, we recommend a step up with high-security anti-pick, anti-drill and anti-pull cylinder. Brands like Cisa Astral S, Mul-T-Lock Junior or Tesa T80 Plus raise protection to police-grade. They cost more but they’re the truly effective barrier against professional break-in attempts.

Damage-free opening

When the client calls in an emergency (keys left inside, lost key, jammed lock), we first assess whether damage-free opening is possible. Most standard locks can be opened with professional techniques (pick, impression key, pin manipulation) in 15-30 minutes without damaging the cylinder. That saves the client the cost of replacing the whole cylinder. For high-grade anti-bump cylinders, damage-free opening may not be possible and the only solution is to drill out the cylinder and replace it, pricier but leaves the door as new with a fresh reinforced-security cylinder.

Multi-point locks

For armoured doors or villas with elevated risk, we recommend multi-point locks that secure in 3 or 5 points along the door instead of the single central point of standard locks. Brands like Cisa, Tesa or Mul-T-Lock make models compatible with most existing doors without having to change the whole door. Install takes 2-3 hours and dramatically improves leverage resistance.
