Why a real security cylinder changes everything

The standard cylinder fitted to most older block doors in Torrevieja, Punta Prima or Pilar de la Horadada is a conventional cylinder with simple pins and flat key with no protection. Its real security is very limited. An experienced burglar opens a standard cylinder in under 60 seconds using the bumping technique, inserting a specially cut key and tapping it with a small hammer on the end. The tap transmits force to the inner pins which jump momentarily and let the cylinder turn. It’s a technique you can learn on YouTube, and bumping kits with keys for every commercial cylinder are sold online cheaply. Without a real security cylinder, your door is essentially decorative against someone who knows what they’re doing.

An anti-bump security cylinder uses special pins with double-strength springs that don’t respond to the sharp tap. On top, mid-to-high range cylinders add anti-pick (asymmetric pin shapes that can’t be manipulated with tension wrench and picks), anti-drill (carbide inserts that destroy the bit before going through), and anti-pull (reinforced body so it can’t be ripped from the door with shears or similar). Difference vs standard is in another category. A properly installed security cylinder turns a break-in attempt into a 20-30 minute visible noisy operation, deterring 95% of attempts.

Security levels and when to use each

For apartments in blocks with neighbours, active community and natural surveillance, we recommend mid-to-high security cylinder like Tesa T80 or Cisa Astral. Effective anti-bump, registered key (can’t be copied without your authorisation), EN1303 grade 5 certification (manipulation resistance over years). Reasonable cost and significant real improvement over standard.

For isolated villas, single-family homes in incident-prone zones, or owners with previous break-in attempts, we recommend high-security cylinders like Cisa Astral S, Mul-T-Lock MT5+, Tesa T80 Plus or Mottura Champions. These step up to EN1303 grade 6, add all the antis (bump, pick, drill, pull), and come with manufacturer break-in insurance. That guarantee matters: if despite everything they get in and you can prove the cylinder was manipulated, the manufacturer covers part of the damage.

Registered keys: the detail few consider

All that investment in a security cylinder loses meaning if key copies can be made freely at any neighbourhood hardware store. The registered key on a security cylinder is only duplicated at the manufacturer’s official distributor by presenting the owner card we hand over at install. Without that card, no copy is possible. That means you control exactly how many keys exist and who has them, and you’ll never have the awkward doubt of whether the local locksmith or copy guy might have kept your key pattern for future use.

For holiday rentals this is especially useful because you can make controlled copies for each tenant, retrieve them at check-out and know with certainty no departing guest can come back with a kept copy. Some high-end systems even have keys with time expiry (the key stops working past a programmed date), but that’s more in pro range.
